South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on Saturday (Dec 7) survived an impeachment motion over his brief declaration of martial law, after members of his ruling party boycotted proceedings despite huge protests outside parliament.
Yoon stunned the nation and the international community on Tuesday night by suspending civilian rule and sending troops to parliament, but was forced into a U-turn hours later after lawmakers nixed his decree.
Opposition parties proposed the impeachment motion, which needed a two-thirds majority to pass, but a near-total walkout by Yoon’s People Power Party doomed it to failure.
Following the parliamentary session, the ruling party’s leader said the president has agreed to an early departure from office.
The opposition Democratic Party is set to propose a new impeachment Bill on Wednesday. It has also vowed to push for Yoon’s impeachment every week.
